Alexis Mac Allister has acknowledged the challenges he faced while playing for Liverpool against Wolves shortly after returning from international duty, following Jurgen Klopp's statement that the Argentina international appeared "relieved" to be substituted at halftime.
Klopp decided to replace Mac Allister during the break at Molineux, with the Reds trailing 1-0 and struggling to maintain possession, and the midfielder was one of the main contributors to their turnovers.
Mac Allister had been photographed using an oxygen tube in the early hours of Wednesday following his participation in Argentina's 3-0 victory over Bolivia in La Paz. The stadium in La Paz is located at a very high altitude, which often causes difficulties for players.
Luis Diaz took Mac Allister's place at halftime and played a pivotal role as Liverpool eventually came from behind to win 3-1, thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson, as well as an own goal from Hugo Bueno.
Klopp admitted that it might have been a mistake to select a fatigued Mac Allister as the defensive midfielder for the Saturday lunchtime game.
Following the manager's comments, Mac Allister took to social media to share his thoughts, writing: "It’s never easy but extremely important to win after the international break. Nice to be back.”
