Arsenal chief Edu broke a transfer promise he made to Lucas Torreira as the window was closed on Monday night.
The 24-year-old, who has been languishing at Atletico Madrid this season, was expecting a transfer. He has failed to impress Diego Simeone and he has started just three La Liga games - two of which he was hauled off at half-time.
Torreira was keen on leaving and moving back to Italy, where he enjoyed some of his best years with Sampdoria.
And Edu was keen on letting him leave after insisting Torreira's happiness was the priority.
He said:
“The situation is very simple. Arsenal are concerned about Torreira, his happiness, that he plays and that he’s well.
"We want to know about him, how he feels and, later, of course, know what Atletico think.
“For us, Lucas and his happiness is the most important thing.
"If everyone is happy, we will continue like this, if Lucas is not well, we will seek a change because there are many teams that are calling me to ask about the player’s situation.”
However, Atletico prevented Torreira from standing any chance of cutting his loan short.
As a result, Edu's promise to the 24-year-old that his situation will change if he was unhappy was broken after the transfer window shut on Monday night.
