Gareth Southgate has said Phil Foden has fitted right into the England set-up after handing the attacking midfielder his first international start.
The Manchester City youngster started for England against Iceland in the Nations League with all the focus on how he transitions his impressive club form onto the international stage. Speaking to Sky Sports pre-match, Southgate said Foden has taken to the England set-up naturally due to not being asked to do anything differently.
"He’s done all of the things we knew he could," the England boss said. " We know how much quality he’s got.
"He’s fitted straight in - that’s the beauty of having St. George’s Park. The younger players come in, they know how we work and understand the way we play.
"We’re not asking him to do anything different to what he does every day of the week.”
Former England defender Ashley Cole agreed with Southgate. He said:
"I wouldn’t want to change him, he enjoys that role, whether it is coming off the right and coming in little pockets.
"His movement and intelligence is very good. Working under Pep, for me, has helped him massively in that understanding - we saw that with Sterling. I think he connects the game, as Pep said, so many players don’t have that intelligence at such a young age.
"For me, he has that. He’s comfortable around the box, he can combine and he can shoot as well. I think hopefully next season we’ll see him play more for Man City."
