Chelsea star Olivier Giroud slammed for team-mate suggestion during Watford win

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been criticised by Premier League legend Ian Wright for failing to obtain on a tempting cross in Saturday's win against Watford. The Blues eased to three points against the Hornets at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Giroud, Willian and Ross Barkley. Mason Mount was named man of the match for a superb display in a deeper midfield role. Giroud hung back, however, and appeared to suggest to his team-mate that he should have cut the ball back. But Wright believes Giroud should have read the cross. "He was very good," Wright said about Mount on Match of the Day. "He played in that Kovacic midfield role. "He has a lot of pace, it was quite easy for him to play it into these [attacking] areas. He was getting the ball and being very productive with his movement and his passing. "Giroud's saying he should have played it out here. No, you've got to go into that near post area. I'm really pleased for him because he went through a bit in the season where he dipped off a bit. Frank [Lampard] stayed with him, kept faith, and he's playing well again." Mount was stunned by the decision to award him the man of the match gong. “I’m quite surprised to be fair. I didn’t think I did that well, I was just trying to keep the ball and keep it ticking over,” he said. “Ross [Barkley] got a goal and an assist, Olivier Giroud too. It was a brilliant performance, we spoke before the game of needing to have that reaction and show what we can do. It was a must win and we did that. We took over in the final third, we could have had a couple more. But we switched off a couple of times and there is things to work on.” Source: Express
