Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has agreed with Canelo Alvarez, who recently stated that Gennady Golovkin would need to win a World Championship in order to get a chance of a trilogy fight in September.
"It's not true that (Golovkin) has the fight in September with Canelo, I agree with Canelo, one hundred per cent, Golovkin has to climb his way back again," said De La Hoya to ESPN Deportes.
"Canelo is now the champion and he has many options, he can go up to 168 pounds, go up to 175 pounds and make history ... If GGG wants to fight Canelo, he has to fight and win a world championship."
WBC and WBA middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez steps into the ring on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to face current IBF middleweight champion, Daniel Jacobs.
“GGG” returns to Madison Square Garden on June 8 to face Steve Rolls.
