Chelsea legend and ex-manager Frank Lampard has opened up about his unsuccessful time at the club as a head coach and revealed some aspirations he had at the club.
In a talk with Diary of a CEO Podcast, the 45-year-old revealed that he wanted to sign West Ham star Declan Rice to make him the captain of Chelsea.
"When I was at Chelsea before, I wanted to bring in Declan Rice. I said he would be the captain of Chelsea for the next 10 years. It didn't happen, but it's hard for me to dissect other people's work between when I left the club and came back. I came into what I came into, and it would be a little bit casual for me to say what they should've done differently."
Lampard took over the club as an interim coach for the final 11 games of the Premier League 2022/23 season. The campaign proved itself to be an all-time-low for the club, with only one win in a total of 11 matches and a bottom-half finish in the league table.
Blaming no one for such a miserable season, the Englishman highlighted the lack of enthusiasm some players had as they were set to leave the club soon after the season ends. He also blamed the size of the squad, which didn't give the players enough time and opportunities to perform at their best.
As for Declan Rice, the West Ham captain has been Arsenal's priority target for a few months already. Despite a seemingly ready deal and a record-breaking fee for the talented England international, his signing is yet to be announced.
