Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has hit out at Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, labelling him "egocentric".
Guardiola has been at the center of criticism, following the Citizens' failure in the Champions League, with the club being knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the competition. This was the third time City have failed to succeed in the Champions League last-16 stage under the Spanish boss. The latter is believed to be too tactical against the rivals instead of using the most successful 4-3-3 formation for his side.
And speaking on the case and Guardiola's tactics, Matthäus has revealed the manager had a similar problem when he was in charge of Bayern Munich.
“With Pep Guardiola I have the feeling that he always wants to do something special in big games,” he told SportBild.
“Barcelona had a DNA, a system he pulled through. Pep was successful there. With Bayern and City, he tried it over and over again with changes and failed again and again.
“He always wanted to show that he could do even better. I would like to tell him: Pep, you are a giant trainer – but please keep your system!
“I would describe it as egocentric: Yes, that’s a harsh word, but it is due to what he did: At Bayern, Robert Lewandowski even had to play left wing once. That did not work out at all.”
