Frank Lampard’s Chelsea claimed an important win at Ajax in the Champions League.
Substitute Michy Batshuayi scored with four minutes remaining to hand Chelsea their second win in Group H.
Lampard handed five Englishmen, aged 21 or younger, their Champions League debuts for Chelsea in the club's first two games this season - the most by a team in a single season in the competition's history.
Following the game, Lampard faced the press.
On Tammy Abraham, Lampard said: "
I wasn’t reluctant. But I think Tammy has been so, so good in the first part of the season that we expect goals and all the good stuff, and it can't be that simple. But what Tammy always gives you is big presence, big enthusiasm and big work ethic.
"I thought he gave that today, but it didn’t quite come off for him in different moments, but that’s the beauty of my role hen I have Batshuayi, and Oli Giroud, the way they train when they are not playing regularly is exactly what you want. I’ve got full confidence in both of them and Michy as you saw, I know he missed a chance, but his hold up play was instantly good in the game and he made a difference, and he got his goal, and I’m delighted for him.”
Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Batshuayi has scored nine goals as a substitute for Chelsea. Before scoring, Batshuayi missed the chance and to the question, whether Lampard thinks he would score after the miss before, the boss answered:
"I didn’t, no. Whatever would have happened after that miss with ten minutes to go I would have been proud of the performance because I thought it was good anyway.
"I know Michy can finish, I see it every day in training. He had his chance, the ball rose on him a bit on the first one, he could maybe have had another touch which he didn’t. But as good strikers do, he got in the box. You have to give Christian huge credit because he looked so lively when he came on. His assist is as important as the finish that Michy had.
"I’ve got belief in the players. The fact that the subs scored makes me so much happier because it’s not easy when you’re picking a similar team every week, I don’t like seeing some of the faces. It’s tough, I understand it. So that hopefully has brightened up their nights. We need everyone going forward."
Christian Pulisic made an assist for Batshuayi to score. Lampard answered, does it looked like he’s settled now.
"
The performance tonight and his last couple of performances of the bench show something of that of course, because he’s come on and made differences. In terms of handling him, I basically tried to shut my ears to too much of the outside talk. With a big player, there’s a lot said and if you listen to it all the time, you can wonder what you’re doing.
"I understood the quality of Christian. I understood his young age. He’s just turned 21 recently and it’s a big move for him. And I have other options for him in those areas. Let’s give him full credit. He wants to know what I want for him, what the PL is like, what his new team-mates are like, that’s not always going to be an easy road.
"I’ve just stayed calm with it, I see the big picture with him. I want him to be successful at this club because he’s a good lad, he wants to do very well, that’s very clear. Acting like he’s acting, training like he’s trained the last two or three weeks, playing like he’s played the last two or three weeks obviously makes me very, very happy."
