Gianfranco Zola wishes Chelsea had told him sooner he would not be involved with Frank Lampard’s coaching staff. Lampard was announced as Chelsea’s new manager on Thursday after months of speculation but decided against keeping Zola on board.
Zola, who assisted fellow Italian Maurizio Sarri last season, is considered a cult hero at Stamford Bridge having played for the Blues between 1996-2003.
And speaking to SunSport, Zola said:
“I found out quite late and the manager positions of the other teams have all been sorted out.
“Regardless, it is a minor thing for me. It was important that it helped my career. Working for a top club with a top coach has been good for me. I was head coach before and my main ambition is to return to that. But to work for Maurizio and Chelsea was a great opportunity.”
