Tommy Haas believes Roger Federer is still hungry for success and will give everything to return to his best form in 2022, with Wimbledon being his best opportunity to win a 21st Grand Slam title
After undergoing double knee surgery in 2020, Federer returned and reached the fourth round at French Open before his knee problem forced him to end his 2021 season.
Haas, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, believes the Swiss will give everything to return to his best and notes that Wimbledon is his best chance to win a 21st Major title.
“We saw at Wimbledon that he was a little bit injured, he wasn’t moving as well as usual,” Haas said.
“But he’s going to make every effort to come back. I’m 100 per cent sure that the goal is Wimbledon. It’s his best surface to go far again.”
“He’s happy,” Haas added.
“He has no reason not to be. He knows that, there’s a lot of gratitude in him. He loves life. But he’s still hungry. He still hopes he can come back. He wants to stop when he wants to, to decide when it’s time to say you don’t like it anymore (because) you lose too much.”
The famous tennis star underwent a third knee surgery recently and was spotted on crutches at Laver Cup, Haas reckons he will know next year whether he can return to his best and wants to continue playing
“It’s all going to depend on how he (Roger Federer) can overcome that (knee surgery) physically,” Haas said.
“We’ll have an element of an answer in March, April, May.”
