Jose Mourinho's Tottenham squad suffered defeat in their opening Premier League game. Spurs defeated to Carlo Ancelotti's Everton with a 1-0 score. Following the game, Mourinho admitted he didn't like the way his team played. "I didn't like my team. I didn't like that so many referees on the touchline allow a free-kick to be taken five metres ahead of where it should be. That creates a different opportunity. I can complain now because I was complaining after the goal. In the second half we were poor after the goal. We weren't physically strong and lacked in intensity," he said. The Spurs boss again admitted, his side need a new striker. "Do we need a striker yes. Was it because of that that we lost the game? No. We lost the game and the responsibility of that defeat is on myself and my players." Mourinho has also spoken out on the physical condition of his players: "We had cases of positive COVID-19. We're not going to say who. We had players in quarantine due to proximity to players with COVID. We had a player in quarantine after going on holiday. We had played on international duty. It was a difficult pre-season and I couldn't expect them to be sharp and agile but I was expecting more from them individually and as a team." So these are the things that we knew could happen to us."
