Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes the departure of co-owner and vice-chairman of the club until 2007, David Dein was the moment when things started to go wrong for the Gunners on the pitch.
Speaking to TalkSport Wright said: “With David Dein going, that was the beginning of the end.
“He’s the kind of person, in respects of football and knowledge and vision and love for the club, who you can’t afford to lose.”
Wright believes it could be a crucial summer for the Gunners, and that there are many questions to be asked ahead of the upcoming season.
He added: “Right now Arsenal are in a position where it is interesting what is going to happen in the summer without the money to spend or qualifying for the Champions League and going back into the Europa League. Have the players improved? Has the mentality improved? What system is he going to play now? There’s a lot of questions to be asked and you just have to hope something happens.”
