Manchester United transfer chief John Murtough heaps praise on Sergio Reguilon after he completed the left-back's signing from Tottenham on a season-long loan deal in a short notice.
Tyrell Malacia has been out injured since pre-season in July but Man United were forced to enter into the transfer market in search for a new left-back after Luke Shaw joined him on the sidelines with an injury in the game against Spurs last month. Erik ten Hag wouldn't want to have Diogo Dalot and inexperience Alvaro Fenandez as his left-back options, hence United signing a new full-back was rather as important as signing a midfielder.
Marc Cucurella was obviously Ten Hag's preferred option at left-back but Chelsea's refusal to agree to Manchester United's loan terms saw the deal fall off. And as a result, they went all in to sign Spurs left-back, Reguilon, on transfer deadline day.
The Spaniard has signed his contract with Manchester United until 2024 and he's now in contention to face Arsenal on Sunday after Ten Hag confirmed that he trained with his new team-mates on Friday morning.
Speaking on the left-back's late arrival to the club, Murtough said: "He [Sergio Reguilon] has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away.
"Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio [Reguilon]. He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season."
Sergio Reguilon also has vowed that he will fight for every ball for Manchester United and show the Old Trafford crowd his qualities.
"I know that I can contribute to Man United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities," he said.
Manchester United were forced to start with Diogo Dalot at left-back last weekend against Nottingham Forest and that didn't work out exactly how Ten Hag planned it as The Reds went two goals behind inside four minutes. The Dutchman obviously wouldn't like to make the same gamble at Arsenal on Sunday.
