Tottenham have appointed Jose Mourinho as their new boss after sacking Mauricio Pochettino.
Mourinho’s first game in charge will be against West Ham United.
Ahead of the game, Mourinho has faced the press.
“I’ve been smiling for two days. I do it with a bit of sadness but I have to speak about Mauricio. I have to congratulate him for the work he has done. This club will always be his home. This training ground will always be his training ground. The door will always be open for him. He will find happiness again. He will find a great club again. He will have a great future.”
“Happiness-wise I am convinced my choice was a great one. (On a scale of one to ten) Ten. The job? Sometimes results make these decisions. I wouldn’t say it’s a (big) job. The club is huge. I know that I have potentially a great job in my hands.”
“I had a feeling I was going to get a club mid-season. I knew I would be in a situation where I would get only one or two days before my first game. I cannot come here and think it is about myself. It is about the players and going from a base of stability. I thought about it during these months because I thought I might get a job mid-season and I might have a game two days later. We have our own ways but they were in the hands of a good manager and coaching staff here.”
“I’m not going to make the same mistakes. I’m going to make new mistakes. I’m not going to say I’m more fit. I was always fit.”
“From an emotional point of view I’m relaxed, motivated and ready and I think the players felt that these two days. I’m ready and I’m here to support them. In life you go through periods like this, where it’s not about myself, it’s about my players and my club.
“I am humble. I am humble enough to try to analyse my career. Not just the last year but the problems and the solutions. The principle of my analysis was not to blame anyone else.”
“I’m nobody to advise people but to have a break was very positive for me. Having the first summer where I didn’t work was not good for me. I was a bit lost. But it was good for me. I even learned how to be a pundit.”
Asked if he’s got his ‘mojo’ back - he responds: “I have to go to Google translate to know what ‘mojo’ is. When I don’t win I cannot be happy and I cannot change that in my DNA. I hope I can influence the players of not being happy without winning football matches. If you are happy after losing football matches, it is difficult to be a winner in any moment of your career.”
“When I don’t win I’m not happy. I cannot change that. If you are happy by losing football matches, it’s difficult to be a winner in any moment of your career. But the emotional control to keep the self esteem and confidence and in those around you is very important.”
“I think I am Mr. Porto and Mr. Real Madrid and other clubs as well, I am whatever club I am at. I wear the pyjamas of the club and sleep in them. I am a club man, but I am a many club man.”
“I was always humble. The problem was that you didn’t understand that. I was always humble but it was in my way.”
"The best gift are the players who are here. I don’t need new players. I just need to get to know these ones better. I know them well but you never know them well enough until you meet them."
"I told the players I came here because of them. I tried to buy some for different clubs and some I didn’t even try because you know how difficult it was."
What will his side look like? “Very similar to before. Of course I will try to add details, and sometimes details can make the difference. Progressively we can arrive to a fingerprint. The style of play must be adaptive to the club culture and also the players here.”
When you were at Chelsea, you said you’d never come to Spurs - what changed? “Yes, that was before I was sacked!”
On winning the title? “We can’t win the Premier League this season. Next season, I’m not saying we will win it, but we can win it.”
Has the Champions League final loss had an effect? “I don’t know because I never lost a Champions League final”
