Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp says it is 'incredible' to buy a player like Joel Matip for free, considering the crazy processes going in transfer market in recent years.
Merseyside club have signed Cameroon international in 2016 from Schalke 04. Despite showing lack of confidence in his first two season, Matip has thrived last year to set an incredible partnership with Virgil van Dijk, which helped Liverpool finish 2018/19 campaign with only 1 Premier League loss and Champions League victory.
"In a world of big transfer fees, to sign a player like Joel Matip on a free transfer is incredible," Klopp said.
"It was maybe one of the best pieces of business we did in the last few years." German added.
Matip has scored a goal in 5 Premier League matches so far. Rated one of the best players for Reds, Joel had the appropriate background to become a good player.
"Joel was always an incredible talent. He played as an 18-year-old boy for Schalke in the Bundesliga," Klopp continued.
"It's a strong league and he played there, and was always a standout player, a fixed point in defence.
"Yes, he lacked a little bit of consistency - that can happen, especially with his physical stature.
"He doesn't always look sensational when he moves. But he grew and developed.
"Joel is in a really good moment and long may it continue." he concluded.
