Few expected to see the Reds make it to next month’s Madrid finale after a 3-0 first-leg defeat at the Nou Camp, but the five-time European champions seal a 4-0 victory at Anfield and progress 4-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted to his players that reaching the Champions League final was impossible.
“The whole performance, the whole game was actually too much, it was overwhelming,” Klopp told BT Sport
. “I said to the boys before the game it was impossible. But because it’s you, I say we have a chance. I’ve watched in my life so many football games, I can’t remember a lot like this. You play against maybe the best team in the world, you’re not allowed to concede, you have to score…. Winning is already difficult, but winning with a clean sheet? I don’t know how we did it. I don’t know how the boys did it, it was incredible how the boys defended.”
The final takes place on Saturday 1 June at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
