Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp personally called Kostas Tsimikas to declare his interest in bringing him to Anfield. The German's words were key in ensuring the Greek international felt wanted at Anfield and allowed the deal to move quickly.
The Reds have been looking to sign a back-up left-back for Andy Robertson. The shortlist was initially topped by Jamal Lewis, with Norwich rejected an offer of £10million.
Liverpool have been tracking Tsimikas for three years and were ready to turn attentions to the 24-year-old.
Sporting director Michael Edwards is said to have met with Olympiacos chief Lina Souloukou on Thursday in Wolverhampton, to negotiate a £11.75m deal. Once everything was in place, Jurgen Klopp had the chance to speak with the player and gave him a phone call.
According to Greek outlet Sportime, he said to Tsimikas: “The decision is yours. We want you, you fit very well in our project and in what we want to play."
