Manchester City have been hit by a series of injury setbacks in the lead-up to the UEFA Super Cup game against Sevilla on August 16, 2023.
During their Premier League opening match against Burnley on Friday night, Kevin De Bruyne had to leave the field due to an injury. While Nathan Ake managed to rejoin the team, John Stones and Ruben Dias were notably missing from the squad, which came as a surprise.
Kevin De Bruyne was sidelined by a persistent hamstring injury for a significant portion of the previous season, including the Champions League final and most of the pre-season. He marked his return during the Community Shield match after recovering from this injury.
However, in Manchester City's recent game against Burnley, manager Pep Guardiola gave De Bruyne a starting position. Unfortunately, the Belgian player could only stay on the field for 23 minutes before having to be substituted due to a relapse of the same hamstring problem. De Bruyne is scheduled to undergo a scan today to assess the extent of the issue.
Portuguese defender Ruben Dias will not be available for the upcoming match against Sevilla due to his involvement in concussion protocol.
According to Pep Guardiola, the City team was concerned when Dias experienced the head injury during a training session before the Burnley match. As a result of the concussion, Dias was unable to participate in the Burnley game due to the mandatory seven-day absence period that is activated in such cases.
John Stones was sidelined from the Burnley match due to a hip injury, and his recovery is not expected until at least the upcoming Saturday game against Newcastle. Pep Guardiola verified on Friday night that Stones experienced discomfort in his abductor muscle as a result of making a pass.
