Former England national team forward Michael Owen says Steven Gerrard was the second best player for him after Zinedine Zidane, whom he played with during his career.
Owen was Gerrard's partner at the Merseyside club before joining Real Madrid in 2004 and playing with Zidane at Los Blancos.
"I played with some great players - Zinedine Zidane was off the scale in terms of natural ability," Owen told BBC.
"But, if I was playing the biggest game of my life tomorrow, the first person I'd probably take into battle would be Stevie. He could do everything.
"He was massive, his stride was huge and he just used to devour ground.
"The biggest compliment I can give him is he is second only to Zinedine Zidane in terms of his world-class status." he added.
