Nico Rosberg thinks his former Mercedes team-mate and F1 rival Lewis Hamilton able to win nine World Drivers' Championship titles.
Hamilton has six titles and he is now just one adrift of going level with Michael Schumacher.
Rosberg is the only man to have got the better of Hamilton throughout a season in the past six years, having won the 2016 title following a fierce battle with the 35-year-old.
The German believes people should focus on steady improvement, rather than merely eyeing targets which might not be achievable.
"
No, no, that's wrong," Rosberg told Austrian newspaper Der Standard, when asked if people should set ambitious goals. "You have to find a balance. One goal is that you optimise yourself and that you get the best out of your options.
"Some drive in motor racing and may not have the talent of a Lewis Hamilton, where maybe I can count myself among them. That is why it is not realistic for me to become world champion nine times, as he may be able to do.
"That is not my aim at all. My aim is to get the best out of myself and I have set myself this goal. Then there is a concrete goal as a result. The problem with goals in a result form is that so much doesn't depend on you. If I then have this engine failure and have my own optimization as my goal, I can still be ecstatic if I know that I achieved everything so brilliantly that day and all year round.
"This is extremely important - but it wasn't one of my strengths either. I was too focused on the result. Of course, this happens because your whole environment is talking about it all the time. Everything else doesn't matter.
"As an athlete, you have to try to find your balance and keep focusing on optimizing your own options. I also learned that during that time. I have made progress, but it is so difficult to take big steps. I think the most successful athletes have this balance and not just the focus on results."
