Peter Schmeichel has criticized Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez for attempting to play the hero role during their 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.
The Red Devils have now suffered three losses in their first five Premier League matches of the season, with goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross, and Joao Pedro sealing another defeat for Erik ten Hag's team.
United currently occupy the 13th position in the early Premier League standings, and their fans expressed their displeasure by booing them at the end of the match.
Schmeichel specifically pointed to Brighton's second goal as a cause for concern for Manchester United, as Pascal Gross managed to navigate through several challenges before scoring. When analyzing this goal, Schmeichel singled out Lisandro Martinez for making an incorrect decision and attempting to be the hero.
“Players, for instance, Martinez here, are trying to be a hero and get in and block. People know this. If we look at him there, he puts himself in a position directly in line of the goalkeeper," he said on Premier League Productions.
“He should be closing down rather of just stood up trying to block. If you want to block, don’t turn your body, stand tall. Clearly things aren’t right for Manchester United.”
