Manchester United have let a number of players go over the years that have gone on to prove that was the wrong decision.
Very rarely are the Red Devils questions for the players they have let go due to the success enjoyed by the club under Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, that does not mean United always get their transfer business right and there have been occasions when former United manager Ferguson and the managers to follow have sold players that they should not have to let go.
Here are four players who Manchester United sold way to soon only to regret it later.
David Beckham
David Beckham had already become the most popular player of his generation when he left for Real Madrid in 2003 following a rift with Sir Alex Ferguson. After spending nearly a decade with the club, Beckham was sold for £25 million. When he left, many felt that Ferguson did the right thing as the former English captain’s best days looked to be over.
However, the then 27-year-old played well for many more years after leaving United.
Diego Forlan
Diego Forlan came to Manchester United for a fee around £6.9million in the 2001/02 season, however, he had to wait for nine months to score his first goal and was sold to Villareal in 2004 for £2 million.
The Uruguayan enjoyed immediate success at Villareal by scoring 25 goals in his very first season. Forlan collected the Golden Ball award for the Best Player in the 2010 World Cup after finishing the tournament as joint top scorer with 5 goals.
Jerard Pique
Gerard Pique managed only 12 appearances in the four seasons he was at Manchester United. When you have Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand playing at the back, there is no way a 21-year-old centre-back could break that partnership.
Ferguson decided to keep Jonny Evans as their deputy and in 2017 sold Pique to Barcelona. Since then, the Spaniard has won many titles with Barcelona. Notably, two Champions League trophies were won when the Catalan club beat his former club in the finals.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United brought Ronaldo for £12m in 2003 when he was just 18 years old. But the player left United for Real Madrid during the summer of 2009 in a record £80m deal. The transfer that no United fan will forget.
Ronaldo made 292 Manchester United appearances with scoring 118 goals and creating 68 assists. With the Red Devils Ronaldo won 3 Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy. The Portugal international played 438 times for Real Madrid scored 450 goals and created 131 assists.
