Manchester City winger Leroy Sane enjoyed an incredible season for the Premier League Champions and named the PFA Young Player of the Year, scoring 14 goals and providing another 17 assists in all competitions. However, Joachim Low left out Sane of Germany’s 23-man squad because Julian Brandt had impressed him in the build-up to the World Cup.
He said: ‘That was a very close decision between him and Julian Brandt, which was made in favor of Brandt. Draxler, Reus and Muller are set. ‘Leroy is a huge talent. He will be back again from September. He had not arrived in international matches yet.
‘It was a very close decision. If it was a 100 metre race, it would have been a photo finish.’ Low added: ‘There are certainly easier days in the life of a national team head coach than they day where I have to send four payers home. ‘These are four players who had merited their place in the provisional squad through their performances.
Germany kickoff their campaign in Russia against Mexico on June 17, before facing Sweden six days later and concluding their group-stage clashes against South Korea on June 27.
