Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Ed Woodward to sign Harry Maguire this summer to build defence around him.
Leicester refused to sell him but United have retained an interest in landing the 26-year-old.
After assessing his squad Solskjaer has now instructed vice-chairman Woodward to land the England World Cup hero.
Maguire himself expects to double his current wages to about £140,000-a-week, while the prospect of landing trophies and playing in Europe on a regular basis is a major selling point.
His current contract at the King Power Stadium expires in 2023 and Leicester are expected to hold out for a big fee.
