Interesting statistics prove Arsenal make progress under Unai Emery

There have been ups and downs since Unai Emery took charge at Arsenal but statistics prove that the Gunners are on the right way to succeed. Arsenal suffered back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea in their first two matches under Emery and then started their unbeaten run of 22 games across all competitions. However, season-ending injuries to Danny Welbeck, Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin saw the north London outfit slide down the table. Although, Sunday's win over Southampton means the Gunners are back in the top four and have a decent chance of sealing a return to the Champions League with 11 games remaining. There's an interesting statistics which proves Arsenal are on the right track under the Spanish coach. It’s a table showing how many points Arsenal have had after 27 games in each of the last five full seasons.

2013/2014 season

Victory over the Saints not only moved the Gunners above Manchester United in the table, but also put them on 53 points which is their highest total after 27 games for five seasons.

2017/18 - 45pts

Following defeat in the north London derby at Wembley they had 45 points after 27 games and never got back into contention for the top four. Final position: 6th (63pts)

2016/17 - 50 pts

Following three defeats in five against Watford, Chelsea and Liverpool then a loss at West Brom left the side on 50 points after 27 games and they would go on to miss out on Champions League football for the first time in over 20 years. Final position: 5th (75pts)

2015-2016 - 51 pts

A dramatic win over Leicester City reduced the gap to a couple of points, but in the very next game they lost to a weakened Man United side at Old Trafford which left them on 51 points after 27 games. Final position: 2nd (71pts)

2014-2015 - 51 pts

Results picked up during the festive period and the team responded to defeat by Spurs by winning three in row to end gameweek 27 on 51 points which had them third in table behind Chelsea and Manchester City. Final position: 3rd (75pts)

2013/2014 - 59pts

A 5-1 loss away at Liverpool knocked them off top spot and were a point behind Chelsea after 27 games of that season. Final position: 4th (79pts)
