Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has opened up on suffering three fatal diseases back in 2012.
Van Dijk was one of the top 3 finalists for the Best Player award along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the UEFA Player of the Year came second as Barcelona star won the award.
In an interview with Four Four Two, the defender said: "In 2012 I suffered from appendicitis, peritonitis and kidney infection. In the vast majority of cases, the patient dies. only the tubes connected to my body, I couldn't do anything. At that moment I thought the worst. I had to do it."
The 28-year-old helped Liverpool to win the Champions League and along with Alisson Becker made it to FIFPro Men’s World’s Best 11.
